Fotona 4D: What It Is In A Nutshell And Its 3 Main Benefits

Have the signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, pigmentation and an uneven skin tone and texture been bringing your confidence down?

One of the biggest reasons for aesthetic procedures is to rejuvenate the skin and bring back its lost glow – with the increasing desire for minimally-invasive treatments that produce synergistic effects, the Fotona 4D laser is the ideal laser that offers an exceptionally wide range of applications to help you achieve naturally beautiful and healthy skin.

Let us now learn more about this powerful platform and how it works:

Fotona 4D in a nutshell

Fotona 4D is the first facial EndoLifting procedure in the world that operates at two different wavelengths: ND:YAG (1,064nm) and ER:YAG (2,940nm). Using these two complementary wavelengths essentially provides three key benefits: replenishing lost volume, resurfacing superficial skin and tightening the deeper tissues through collagen production.

Applied in 4 treatment modes, each one can be used separately to customise your treatment and target a specific problem area, or used together to produce visible and synergistic effects.

The 4 treatment modes are:

Step 1: The SMOOTH® mode is a non-ablative laser that works to plump up the skin and tighten the cheeks, as well as reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It works similarly to a dermal filler but with longer-lasting effects without being as invasive.

Step 2: The FRAC3® mode uses a fractional beam to target deeper layers using the Nd:YAG laser (super long-pulse duration that extends to the seconds) and trigger the skin’s natural repair mechanism to firm, tighten and lift skin.

Step 3: The PIANO® mode also utilizes the Nd:YAG laser to gently removes imperfections on the surface of the skin, including the neck. It can effectively reduce imperfections such as atrophic scars, hypertrophic scars, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation on the skin after several treatments.

Step 4: Completed with an Erbium peel, The SupErficial™ mode enhances the appearance of the skin by removing dead skin cells while reducing obvious imperfections such as fine lines, loss of volume and uneven skin tone.

A 2018 study showed that the non-ablative Er:YAG laser treatment (SMOOTH® mode) in Fotona 4D is effective in facial rejuvenation and for the treatment of nasolabial folds and wrinkles, with patients seeing significant improvements 6 months after treatment and a high patient satisfaction rate – making it a safe, painless and effective treatment.

Since the laser platform can target both the superficial and deeper skin layers, it works in different “dimensions” to target issues such as acne and acne scar removal and rejuvenate the skin from the inside out.

Here is a summary of the benefits:

  • Plump and smoothen nasolabial lines
  • Increase skin density and tighten the skin of our face and neck
  • Reduce pigmentation and brighten skin
  • Reduce pore size
  • General improvement of skin texture and reduction of skin imperfections

We are proud to offer the long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser for our patients to reap the benefits of this amazing platform.

Benefits of the long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser

The Nd:YAG (1,064nm) laser wavelength works to create “thermal injury” to the deeper skin layers and trigger collagen and elastin production without harming the surrounding tissues. The laser can also be further customised to target different skin imperfection and optimise your results.

Here are 3 benefits of the Nd:YAG laser:

1. A delicate treatment with minimal side effects

No needles, no anaesthesia (available upon request) and no surgery required, the Nd:YAG laser is a delicate treatment that uses controlled bulk heating – meaning that there is no risk of thermal damage to the surrounding skin as compared to traditional ablative lasers such as the Fractional CO2 laser.

Patients will be happy to hear that it is a non-invasive treatment that has the potential to provide benefits similar to more invasive treatments such as thread lifts, Botox and dermal fillers without having to worry about pain or undesirable side effects! In fact, the treatment is gentle enough for you at more delicate areas such as the eye area and much more comfortable than other energy-based treatments such as Ultherapy. Minimal side effects include mild redness that lasts for a few hours. Patients are also advised to wear sunscreen daily and avoid excessive sun exposure for better face lifting results.

2. Advanced skin rejuvenation with no downtime

During the treatment, laser energy is delivered into the dermis, specifically targeting skin fibroblast cells, stimulating them to increase collagen production. This replaces the lost collagen caused by photodamage, ageing or other factors. The laser is also emitted in millisecond pulses, much longer than most lasers with nanosecond pulses – allowing the aesthetic doctor to deliver more energy per pulse – resulting in better results without increasing downtime!

If you don’t wish to deal with long recovery times, the long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser is an ideal treatment that allows you to go about your daily activities right after. The procedure is not painful, and most patients report the treatment to be comfortable.

Roughly 2-5 sessions (depending on your needs and goals), 4-6 weeks apart are recommended for best results.

3. It can be used to treat active acne and scarring.

As a bonus, the long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser can also be used to target and treat overactive sebaceous glands, remove superficial blemishes and smooth out mild-to-moderate acne scars due to collagen remodelling.

A 2021 study comparing the 1,064nm Nd:YAG laser and Pulsed-dye laser for the treatment of acne vulgaris showed that both were equally successful in treating mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne lesions.

A 2018 study further suggested that the long-pulsed 1,064nm laser can be effectively and safely used to treat inflammatory lesions in the skin, particularly acne vulgaris in Asian patients.
